Why a family of four left to look for home.

We're a family of four — two parents, two small kids — slow-traveling Latin America trying to figure out where we actually want to call home. Not vacation. Home.

We had a quiet life in the States that was working, mostly. Then one night we asked the question out loud: what if we just left? Not forever, not as a stunt — just long enough to find out if somewhere else might fit better. A month later we were on a plane.

The route so far

• Florida — one month. Soft launch. Same language, easy onramp. Taught us what we'd actually miss and what we wouldn't.
• Uruguay (Montevideo region) — three months. Quiet, safe, more European than we expected. The kids found their feet.
• Costa Rica — five months. Tropical, expensive in the spots Americans go, much cheaper everywhere else.
• Panama (Buenaventura Marina) — currently four months in. Beach, marina, English signs at the gate, Spanish everywhere else.

What you'll get from this site

Two threads of time, braided together every week. The Journey — our backstory, dripped out slowly: the night we said yes, the first scary decision, what we believed that turned out wrong. The Dispatches — what this Tuesday actually looked like. What broke. What groceries cost. The kids' takes.

We're trying to make the kind of writing we wished existed before we left: real numbers, real logistics, real life with kids. Not "best beaches in Costa Rica." The boring stuff that actually decides whether a place is livable.

Who writes this

Both of us. Brian writes his side, Katie writes hers. Same trip, same weeks, two completely different chairs.

Brian's going to tell you what the logistics looked like to him — the numbers he ran, the decisions he was second-guessing, what he was worried about, what he got right and what he got wrong. Katie's going to tell you what the week actually looked like in her hands — the kid stuff, the slower observations, the people they met, the things that broke that he wouldn't think to mention.

Every issue has some of both — sometimes the main piece is his and she writes the P.S., sometimes they alternate, sometimes one of them writes solo about a week the other was sick or away. We're not influencers, no YouTube, nothing on-camera. Just words and photos, on our own schedule, in our two voices.

How we make money (eventually)

The email list is the asset. Down the road we'll recommend things we actually use (relocation insurance, flights, residency services), and we'll make a relocation playbook for families like ours. That's it.
